Crystal's Sweet Summertime Quickpages!!!

I have to admit something. I am a quickpage snob. I hate using quickpages because then I feel like the page I have made isn't "mine." But Crystal made this set of seven great quickpages that are super cute. I am so far behind on my scrapbooking, and I am trying to catch up, but it is slow going. We are just such a busy family and take so many pictures! So last night I sat down with a goal to use all seven quickpages. I tried to spread them out so that they wouldn't be all right next to each other. These pages range from August of last year until yesterday, so hopefully they won't end up too close to each other in the album!

The zoo... again

We go to the zoo a lot, and I always feel like we have way too many zoo pages, BUT, every trip is different and deserves its spot in the sun. I love this one because of our cute group pictures, and just couldn't resist the picture of the polar bear eating his dinner. Just as an fyi the polar bear picture is not part of the template, I created a mask with a standard photoshop elements brush. I love the way that it blends with the background paper!

I have been such a slacker this year. I take all my pictures, but I never post them on time. I end up posting a week or two at a time, and it is a headache... I am not giving up though! In Feburary somehow I lost a picture, I have had this page most of the way done for over a month, but couldn't find the picture. Then this week this awesome new kit came out at www.jessicasprague.com and I was inspired to search out the photo... just in case you are wondering, the missing picture is Nicholas in the crazy Elton John glasses...

Awesome New Goodies

I am inordinately excited about this page. You know how there are some designers that just creativley click for you? Queen of Quirk is one of those designers for me. I have kind of been following her at Songbird over the past little while. She often is a designer or collaborator on the monthy kit there. I am just drawn to her digi goodness.

So, when she came on board as a designer at Jessica Sprague it would be an understatement to say that I was excited. I love all the designers that are already there, and think their stuff is great, but as the ice cream on top, we get Queen of Quirk in the mix! Excellent!

So, anyway, onto the credits...

I have been avoiding last summer...

June is a bear. I keep a "grid" of pages to do. I have a whole folder system on my computer, and a piece of paper that shows which order the pages will go in, if they are a single page or a two page spread, etc. Between the June and July calendars on my grid are 36 pages... yes you read that right 36. Please note there are only 30 days in June. Of course some of those are two page spreads (6 of them to be exact), but the bottom line is that June was busy. School ended. We did work in our garden and around the house. Jean came to visit. We drove to Montana. We hung out in Montana. We visited most of the dinosaur trail. We had a funeral and a quasi family reuinion. Lots happened. I suppose I could just rely on the calendar to document the little stuff, but most often the pages of the little stuff are the ones that I not only love to do, but also the ones that I come back to and enjoy looking at the most.

So, today I was taking one of Jessica Sprague's amazing classes (www.jessicasprague.com), and I picked a page to do. Her finished product was a little bit more feminine than mine... but that is par for the course around here. We are a boy family, and lots of scrapbook stuff is pretty darn feminine!

So, here are the credits:

The class is called "Walkthrough: Curved Journaling Strips" - and I highly reccomend it. I not only learned about creating the journaling strips, but I am still working through my transition from Elements to Photoshop and the keystrokes alone made it worth the watch!

All of the supplies for the class are donated by Meredith Fenwick, and come with the class enrollment.

The title font is Ma Sexy, the journaling is (my favorite) socially awkward, the font on the curved journaling strips is oh(photo)shoot.

One thing I love about Jessica Sprague (www.jessicasprague.com) is that thier digital goodness is always growing. One of the newer designers is Kitschy Digitals, and I think that this is the first time that I have had the chance to use thier digi materials. I got a scanner earlier this year that will scan in slides and negatives, and I have been spending my spring break working through the immense pile of family photos. Currently I am working on an old book of negatives from High School when I took photography classes. When I saw this jewel I just couldn't resist creating a page for it and posting it for the whole world to see!

Okay, I know I kind of cheated and went ahead and did December's calendar before finishing November's pages. Don't worry I plan to finish both soon, but I actually really hate messing around to get the calendar template and so I went ahead and finished the last two months at once so that I could just be done with the templates. I have a ready made tempalte for next year from www. jessicasprague.com made my ikari and I cannot wait to use it when we get to the end of January! It will be so nice not to have to make all the little boxes for the pictures!

Oh how we love to get ready for Christmas..

In our family we love fall and winter holidays...

Acutally that isn't quite true. In our family we love getting ready for the fall and winter holidays. Halloween is the whole month of October, and by golly Christmas starts the day after Thanksgiving.

Our house is already decorated, the Christmas books are already been out and the majority of them have been read through at least once, and the movies are up and loaded on the apple T.V.

This year though I am putting together a book to help us organize the holiday experience and spread it out a bit across the month of December. I will try to post each day's page as I complete it... right now I only have December 1st done. Ideally I will have the whole month done by the end of the week so that it can be printed and put together, but seeing as I am pretty low on time, and high on illness and stress these days we will see if that happens!

I have to say I love Jessica's Templates. Normally I don't like templates where they do all of the work for you, I always find that I need to go back and redo the drop shadows and then I miss some and the page is inconsistent (I know no one notices but me... but I look at my pages more often than everyone else...). But, Jessica's drop shadows are fabulous, and I never have to do a thing to the template! I love it!

We did so much fun stuff outdoors in mid april. It is amazing after being stuck inside all winter, how much you appreciate the beautiful spring days!

Field Museum April 12th, 2009

After getting home from Montana on April 11th, we decided that it sounded fun to drive to Chicago for the day to see an exhibit at the Field Museum that was about to close... crazy I know.

We had a great time at the museum and the boys especially liked seeing the piratess and the mummies!

At Long Last...

It has been a while... but I finished a page today. It actually is the page I got stuck on a few months ago. I was just so uninspired by it! So, here we go. Hopefully this gets me back on the horse. In the meantime, I have gotten a bit behind. I am a little bit silly about organization, and have a paper that maps out all the pages I have to do (I know, I know excessive right). It tells me that I have over 70 pages to do (or 35 spreads, which ever way you want to look at it). AHHH, I thought the goal was to be caught up by the time school started. How did I get so behind this summer?

Exciting News

Many of you know that I love to digital scrapbook... and if you are reading this blog then you are probably thinking something along the lines of "way to state the obvious Chris...!" What some of you may not know is that for the past few months I have been working as a creative team member for a friend of my Crystal Wilkerson, who has been designing Digital Scrapbook materials at Two Peas in a Bucket. Today she made the announcement that she will be moving to a new digi home and will instead be at www.jessicasprague.com . Her Digital Scrapbooking supplies will be added to the all of the awesome stuff already there.

The super exciting news for me is that I get to "move with her" as a creative team member. I am so excited. So, over the next year I will be putting up some information here on what is going on over there with sales, etc. I also will still be posting my layouts.

I know that this is of little relevance to most people, but the woman at the costco photo center made my weekend! I sent some scrapbook pages in online to have them printed because we were going out there tonight to get dog food. When I went to pick them up she was grinning and told me that she was waiting for me to come in because she had found out about a week ago that we are getting a LARGE FORMAT PRINTER! That measn that I don't need to drive to chicago, or fly around the country to get my pages printed. It also means that I can print pages whenever I feel like driving out there, and it means that I will be motivated to scrapbook again! I have been frustrated since we came back from Helena with all of the drama associated with printing... and all of that will be gone soon! Hooray!

A productive drive to Missoula

We drove to Missoula today to visit my brother David. I got a lot of scrapbooking done on the drive there and back. I am very motivated by the fact that we will be leaving Helena soon, and I want to get more pages printed while it is cheap and easy. We made it to Helena, and first thing on our first morning here what was I doing? I was calling Costco to see if they had the machine that develops 12 x 36 pictures... yep, I know I have a problem. But, the good news is that they do! So I got the 15 pages I had done on my computer developed yesterday, and then made the decision to get as many pages done as I can before we leave so that I can get them developed while I have access to the good machine.

One Big Blizzard

We have had quite a snowy road trip. We are still hopeful that it will clear up enough for us to see Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Devil's Tower tomorrow as we continue on our way to Helena. We took some pictures of the storm as we have traveled, and I put one up for the photo of the day over at www.dewald365.blogspot.com, but it was so hard to pick just one, so here is a bit of a photo essay of our trip -

We took this picture before we got into the thick of the storm. It got worse. As we were driving through this Dave was crying in the back. There weren't really any towns to stop in, and we wanted to just keep going. Finally though his crying was driving me insane, and we found a rest area so we stopped.

Doesn't this look fun? Dave was crying because he had diarheaa (sp?). Poor guy. I stood out here as long as I could tolerate to let him poop, and by the time I got back in the car I was a popsicle. You can see all the snow in the picture, it is going sideways from the wind (notice how you can see Marley's leash blowing in the wind... it has got to be quite a wind to pull out extra slack on a retractable leash!).

In Wall, South Dakota (where Wall Drug is) we stopped for gas and food and discovered that the roads were closed ahead and so we couldn't go much further. We got a hotel at the Best Western where they allow pets, there is free wi fi and there is an indoor pool. We took naps and then went swimming. It was strange to be swimming in the middle of this storm, but the hot tub worked wonders for the tension that had built up during our white knuckled drive through the blizzard.

When we came back to the room after swimming, we showered and put on our pjs and then sent Dion out to get food for us from the only local restaurant open during the storm. But the car was stuck in the parking spot. We finally got the car out and I borrowed a shovel to clear the spot so that we don't get stuck again. I felt right at home shoveling. This is supposed to be vacation!

Jonathan's Blanket

Yesterday I invited some people over for playgroup... then I put up this quilt right in the middle of the living room, and strong armed them into helping me tie it! They were good sports about it. I finished tying it last night and will sew the binding on today and hopefully by Monday will have the hand sewing done on the binding. I am so relieved to be this far on it, I had promised myself that I would have it tied for him by winter... he demolished it last winter, and it needed a new backing. I didn't get any pages done today because I spent all of my free time tying the quilt!

Thoughts on my boy Jonathan

Jonathan has not been doing his book reviews lately. Sorry about that, it is not that we haven't been reading, it is just that we forget to sit down and write them. Tonight we finished a great book. It is pretty new, published just last year, and is not part of a series (yet... I guess it is possible that there will be another book...). It is called Mighty Monty and was written by Johanna Hurwitz. If you have a child, especially a boy, but any child first grade who likes to read chapter books, I highly reccomend it. It is a very real life story, about a very average boy. He has asthma, and he lives in a residential neighborhood. He goes to school, is in first grade. Just a pretty regular kid. The stories are powerful though. I love that there are no bad guys, and that the struggles that he goes through (and triumphs in by the way) are the kind of struggles that every kid goes through. It is just great. Read it!

The second thing about Jonathan that I wanted to write is that he has a friend at school. Yes I know that is shocking. I heard about his friend for the first time a little while ago. He told me that she is not in his class, and that he likes to play with her at recess. That was the long and the short of it. Then one day he expressed anxiety about getting in on time at recess. He was worried that he would get in trouble because some of his friends have gotten in trouble for being too slow. I asked if he had ever gotten in trouble and he said no, I asked if he had a hard time getting back on time, and he said well sometimes because he walks his friend back. At this point I started to get curious about this friend. Then one day I met his friend. Things started to make more sense. His friend is handicapped. I am not sure how, Jonathan doesn't know the name, but maybe MS? She walks with a limp and speaks with a slur. But she and Jonathan are great friends. Tonight we ran into her and her family at swim lessons. Apparently her little brother is in Nicholas's class. Joanthan and his friend ran around playing, and it was great to see how happy they both were playing together. I am so proud of him that he is able to see her for the sweet person she is and not get caught up in her limp or her slurred speech. I can't understand her when she talks, but he can. When we asked her questions he would repeat her answers for me so that I could understand. It was such a great experience to see. He is such a great kid!

I am working on the Alphabet Album for this trip. It looks pretty similar, uses the same papers and elements (all from Weeds and Wildflowers, the paper is from the wrinkly paper kit, and the flowers are from the beleiving in you add on). I am on Q, and am quitting for tonight. I plan to finish tomorrow so that I can move onto February...

This is a page that I originally did not plan on doing (hence the I finished all of july through december, and then going back today and doing a july page...). But, as I was working on putting all the pages in the album I realized that I needed one more page to make them line up right... this one was the winner. The template is an old weeds and wildflower template from a challenge that I never completed. The paper and elements are from the these little moments kit by lisa sisneros at weeds and wildflowers. I reorganized my scrapbook stuff by designer (I was getting really tired of going through it alphabetically, I think I had the order memorized), and I realized that I really really like her stuff.

This page nearly drove me insane. There is something wrong with it, and the type is messed up. The font size on a scrapbook page is pretty similar to a word document. Standard type size in word is 12. I usually go for somewhere between 14 and 20 when I do journaling on a page, partly because the page is busier than a black and white word document, and partly because the fonts are a bit harder to read. The font on this page is set at a 2. yes a two. Why? I have no idea. For some reason it was off kilter. It took me forever to figure out why nothing was showing up when I was typing, and when I finally made my box really really big the words showed up. HUGE! So problem solved... kind of. Hopefully it never happens again! I am just going to go on my merry little way assuming that it was something funny about the template I used (which was by timounette). The paper and elements were from the my dad said so kit from Little dreamer, and the title was a brush from one of crystal wilkerson's 365 kits at two peas.
